Ants food preferences vary according to their lifestyle; they do not prefer consuming pure milk and some fatty dairy products.

However, it is rare to see them moving around the corner of a bowl and swimming inside the bowl in a kitchen that shows a lesser interest in it.
A few species of ants seem interested in drinking it when there is no other food source around them as they can digest it.
They prefer to consume sweet and nutritious food like sugar syrup, but they consider it a second option to fulfill their nutrition requirement.
Additionally, you probably have seen many tiny insects in a packet of milk powder in a kitchen cabinet. They are attracted to the powder because it combines healthy ingredients.
Why do ants avoid drinking milk?
The internal systems of ants differ from humans, and their bodies are not made to digest plain milk without any supplements; that’s why they avoid drinking it.
Digestion problem
They have a poor digestive system that is incapable of digesting lactose, a carbohydrate in a huge amount in dairy products.
These are not receptive to lactose, which is why it is unattractive to ants. It could be due to the lesser production of the enzyme lactase that can help break lactose.
Moreover, they usually attack simpler carbohydrates like glucose or sucrose, but lactose is not their preference.
Fear of drowning
The fear of losing life is common among insects which prevents them from diving into a milk-filled bowl.
They have no courage to dare and drink even a single drop from a bowl because they can fall into it. It can be the reason for their lesser interest in it as it can only pose a risk to their lives.
I have seen ants drowning in the water bowl while trying to move carefully along the edges. However, this poor soul was about to lose life when I picked it up and left it on the floor.
Higher protein ratio
It contains a higher content of complex carbohydrates and proteins like lactose and casein.
It can help fulfill the protein content of the diet of ants, but an excessive quantity of casein can cause death.
They cannot produce new larvae if the content of protein increases in their body and the enzyme to break down the complex proteins is insufficient.
Highly proteinaceous food containing higher quantities of casein is found to affect development and reduce their lifespan.
What type of milk products do ants like?
Plain milk can be the second priority of the ants, but they are going to leave some fatty products prepared from it, like cheese, as it contains a high quantity of fat that is not beneficial for them.
However, there are some other products that act as nutritional supplements for them.
Ice cream
A melted cone of ice cream on the floor is just like a feast for these smaller insects. They can detect the sugars from a distance of miles and get attracted to them.
It is made of cream, and some flavors and sweeteners are added to make it tastier. These sweetening agents attract them, which can signal other fellows to come and attack.
Moreover, you do not have to feel bad if you have dropped ice cream on the pavement because these tiny creatures will consume it.
Flavored milk
Some healthy drinks are available in multiple flavors with a good quantity of milk. It is a good source of nutrition for ants, and they can easily digest it.
It has enough artificial sugar that provides enough nutrients to these insects, and you can see them attacking even the drop of thick liquid in bulk.
Some people feel creepy to see the presence of insects in the flavored milk bottle and dispose of it immediately, while some do not bother and consume it after removing it.
Baby formula powder
It is also sweet, and its ingredients do not nurture only babies, but ants can also improve their growth after consuming it.
These insects also like its flavor and enter an open container as it contains non-fat milk and corn syrup. In addition, it contains whey protein and some essential oils for nourishment.
Moreover, it can provide vitamins and minerals like calcium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, and iron that promote growth by strengthening their inner skeletons.
Milk powder
People use it to make tea, and it is also a source of nutrition that can be easily consumed.
You have to keep the opened packs inside a sealed container to avoid the entry of ants; otherwise, it becomes difficult to control a swarm of tiny insects that can make it poisonous.
Moreover, it is better to clean the powder spread on the working platform as they can smell a small quantity of powder due to ingredients and reach it easily.
Human breast milk
It is a source of nutrients for crawling insects, providing all essential vitamins and minerals in a balanced quantity.
It has almost 15 to 17% of the natural sugar content and contains essential immune-boosting agents and immune cells to fight against the infection.
Furthermore, they are attracted to it due to its higher sugar content.
Do all ants like milk?
Ants have multiple species that have varying nature and food requirements to grow. Therefore, it depends on their nature, type of food, living location, and whether they like milk or not.
Some of them can break down the sugar or lactose into simpler structures, while a few of them are not capable of digesting it efficiently.
They usually do not prefer plain milk but consume processed food like cheese or butter when they have no other option to fill their stomach.
Fatty foods come at the bottom of their preference list because they do not need a high quantity of fat in their diet.
Out of 15,000 to 16,000 species, only some grease ants prefer milk and prepared products, but they are not commonly present.
How to protect milk products from ants?
You do not have to bother an open can of milk on the bench top because a few ants are only interested in it that are not so common.
However, securing it is better than keeping it inside a sealed container.
You can clean the working bench after preparing food to clean the remains of powder that can help avoid their entry.
In addition, wipe the dirty surface with a clean towel after dipping it into a mixture of vinegar and water having a few drops of tea tree oil.
Vinegar is highly effective against sugar ants that are mainly responsible for destroying the whole bottle as its acid is toxic for black ants.
This oil repels these insects away and keeps the area free of infestation. It is better to rinse off the condensed milk bottles if any residue is left in its corner.
Furthermore, you can place cinnamon or cardamom close to the bottle or bowl can as their strong aroma keeps insects away.
What do people say about this?
I surveyed 956 people to know whether they have seen ants drinking milk or if they did not like it.
Out of 956 people, 661 (69%) said they have not seen them roaming around the milk bottle or bowl, which shows that they have little or no interest in it.
However, 162 people (17%) said they had witnessed these small insects swimming in the bowl full of milk, which means they were trying to drink it but fell.
While the remaining 133 people (14%) said they do not know about it and have never observed such a creepy thing as they have no direct experiences with such stuff.
It is a daring task for them to crawl on the bowl edges as they can slip into a bowl.
“I have never seen an ant moving on the milk bowl edges showing an unwillingness to drink it.”
Ants can not swim, so they usually drown and rarely get out of it without being dead.
“I had caught an ant drowning in the middle of a bowl; that means it attempted to drink it.”
You can see a long row of marching insects moving to the food leftovers of high protein and carbohydrates nature instead of attacking fats.
“I have seen them interested only in sweet juicy food items, and they never move towards drops of milk left on the floor.”
