I kept a piece of margarine and butter in one plate and left it on the countertop to check the response of these tiny insects.
It was amazing to see that all of these insects get attracted to the stick of butter and ignored the margarine. They turned their heads opposite the salty or processed food and changed their way.
In the same way, I removed the butter from the plate to see whether it came towards margarine or not and if there was no other better choice of food.
The results were surprising as none of these insects still chose this processed food because it is less appetizing and nutritious for them.
Furthermore, they quickly move in the opposite direction even if they accidentally reach the stick, which shows they are not interested in eating it.
What do ants choose between butter and margarine?
Many people choose margarine to fulfill their body requirements of fat because this refined product can provide you with almost similar benefits at a low cost.
However, ants seem more intelligent than humans as they make wise choices while selecting food for nutrition. These insects always choose natural butter over refined products.
It seems to be a suitable decision because it is a highly processed food prepared after hydrogenation using chemicals and pressure to produce it.
Vegetable oils like safflower, sunflower, corn, rapeseed, soybean, and cottonseed are compressed under high pressure.
However, butter is a natural source of nutrients as it is extracted from dairy fat. The butter contains almost 78 to 83% milk fats and a small amount of water, milk solids, or negligible salt.
It is prepared from milk or cream and becomes a rich source of saturated fats. Accordingly, it cannot replace saturated fat because it contains trans-fats or unsaturated fats.
Accordingly, you can test their choices by providing both food types at one location and look for these insects’ behavior.
All ants are supposed to move towards the stick of butter and ignore the margarine because they prefer natural and unprocessed food to avoid the consumption of harmful chemicals.
